Picking a hex code makes an icon the right colour today. Choosing a theme colour makes it the right colour forever: the add-on stores which slot you chose — accent 1, accent 2, the theme's text colour — and resolves it against the presentation every time. Change the deck's theme and the icons you insert follow it.
