Goal Seek

Support — Goal Seek

How to use it

  1. Open the spreadsheet and select the cell whose formula must reach a number.
  2. Open Goal Seek from the right-hand side panel. The first field is already filled in with the cell you selected.
  3. Type the number it should become, and the cell that may be changed.
  4. Press Solve.

What the messages mean

MessageWhat happened
“… contains a formula.”The cell you asked it to change holds a formula. Goal seeking overwrites that cell, so it stops rather than destroy your work. Point it at a cell holding a plain number.
“… has no formula, so changing another cell cannot move it.”The target is a typed value. Nothing you change elsewhere can move it.
“I could not find a value that reaches your goal.”The target never crosses your number, however far the input moves. Either the goal is out of reach, or the relationship runs the other way.
“The target cell is an error (like #DIV/0!)…”There is nothing to measure around the current value. Fix the formula first.
“I got close but the target keeps jumping…”Usually ROUND or an IF threshold: the target steps rather than slides. Try a narrower search range.

Common questions

Is there a keyboard shortcut? No, and no add-on can offer one — Google Workspace™ add-ons cannot bind keys. Open it from the side panel.

Why does it take a few seconds? Each attempt has to write a number, wait for the whole sheet to recalculate on Google's servers, and read the result. That round trip is the cost. This add-on is built to need as few of them as possible, and it always tells you how many it used.

Can I get my old value back? Yes — Undo in the panel restores the value the cell held before the last search.

Does it work on Google Sheets™ mobile? No. Google Workspace™ add-ons run only in the browser version.
